Minnesota farmers focused on hay and small grain harvesting last week
A cool and wet week didn’t slow down too many Minnesota farmers working on hay and small grains. USDA reporters say with less than five days of suitable weather, quite a bit of the field work got done.
The second cutting of alfalfa hay is 94% complete. Spring wheat harvesting is 31% finished with the crop rated as 76% good to excellent. About 78% of the state’s oats are harvested, and nearly a third of the Minnesota barley for grain was harvested as of Sunday.
USDA says 18% of the potatoes are harvested, and some sugarbeets are being harvested.
Eighty one percent of the corn is at dough stage or beyond, and is 83% good to excellent. Nearly all of the state’s soybeans have set pods, and some are turning color. The soybean crop is rated 84% good to excellent.
