Indiana dairy farmer embraces and sees benefits of technology on his farm

A central Indiana dairy farmer says he has seen the benefits of embracing technology and upgrading to robotic milkers on his operation.

John Carter runs an 80 head dairy farm with his parents – Jeff and Kathy.

He says they made the decision to install two Lely robots because of labor concerns.

“I just decided if I was going to come back and maintain the dairy that I wanted to do the robotics because of labor savings,” he says.

And he says the cows are happier.

“The cows enjoy it and I enjoy seeing them having the choice of when they want to eat or milk or sleep- the free range of the cows was a big selling point for us,” he says.

The farm includes a swine and row crop operation and Carter says the decision to implement robotic milkers really was a no brainier for time management.

Carter Dairy Farm was part of an ag media tour by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture today.
