More rice, less cotton in 2020

The USDA projects a larger than a year ago rice crop against a decline in cotton production.

As of August 1st, the rice crop is estimated at 218.112 million hundredweight, up 33.437 million from 2019, thanks to an increase in average yield and planted area. This year’s average yield is seen at 7,600 pounds per acre, compared to 7,471 a year ago, with harvested area of 2.87 million acres, compared to 2.472 million last year.

Upland cotton is pegged at 17.525 million bales, a year to year drop of 1.702 million on the year, with an higher average yield canceled out by lower acreage totals. The average yield for upland cotton this year is seen at 929 pounds per acre, compared to 810 in 2019, with harvested area at 9.057 million acres, compared to 11.389 million the year before. All types of cotton are expected to average a record 938 pounds per acre.

Domestic old and new crop cotton and rice ending stocks were up on the month, while new crop stocks were up for cotton and down for rice.

The current marketing year for cotton and rice started August 1st.
