ASA pushes for rehearing of dicamba case

The American Soybean Association is pushing for a rehearing of the 9th Circuit court case that pulled registration for three dicamba products.

Kentucky farmer Caleb Ragland, chair of ASA’s regulatory advocacy team, tells Brownfield Ag News growers MUST have these tools for the U.S. to remain a leader in soybean production, “There’s areas of this country without this tool it’s nearly impossible to grow a successful soybean crop. The Palmer pigweeds in the south and then the Waterhemp more widespread it’s just become nearly impossible to kill otherwise.”

Ragland says the court’s decision in June was only from a three-judge panel and ASA and other ag groups want the case re-heard before a broader panel of nine judges. In the meantime, Ragland says ASA is working with the EPA to reregister the products for 2021.

Joining ASA in the newest friend of the court brief asking for a rehearing are the National Cotton Council of America, National Association of Wheat Growers, National Corn Growers Association, National Sorghum Producers and American Farm Bureau.

An ASA-led grower coalition filed another amicus brief last month defending EPA’s decision to allow for the continued use of existing stocks of the products.
