Maxwell Foods to close hog operations by mid-2021

Goldsboro Milling, the parent company of North Carolina-based Maxwell Foods, has announced it is permanently closing its hog production facilities.  In a release, the company cited current and projected financial losses from the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for the closure.

Maxwell Foods, the 10th largest hog producer in the US, will be shuttering operations in a phased approach based on growing cycles with all operations ending by mid-2021.  The company says all current grower contracts will be honored.

The North Carolina Pork Council says they’re optimistic that the phased transition will allow for employees to find other opportunities in the livestock industry and sustainable options will be found for the approximately 150 contract farms in the Maxwell Foods system.

Maxwell Farms has 54,000 sows and has been in business for 31 years.
