Illinois farmer has “some of the best crop stands” in 2020

Brownfield has received a positive crop report from a southeast Illinois farmer.

“We’ve got some of the best stands we have ever had for both corn and soybeans.”

Jim Raben, who farms in Ridgway near the borders of Indiana and Kentucky, says corn is beginning to turn and he predicts harvest will begin at the end of the month.

But while Raben expects good yields this year, the surplus of US grain and low commodity prices have him concerned.

“Corn that is $3.00, maybe less that $3.00 at harvest, is not even close to a break-even point.”

Raben was recently elected chairman of the US Grains Council. He says export relationships are his top priority in that role.
