USDA seeks comments on proposed new organic rules

The sixty-day comment period starts Wednesday for USDA’s proposed changes to organic regulations.

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service says they want to strengthen oversight and enforcement of the production, handling, and sale of organic agricultural products.  Some of the changes in the proposed rule address organic import certificates, product traceability, standardized certificates of operation, and changes in the compliance and appeals process.

The proposed regulations would also adjust labeling rules for non-retail containers and outline how to label organic content in multi-ingredient products.

Comments on the proposed regulations are being accepted online.

AMS is proposing that all new requirements be implemented within a year.
