Winfield United on in-season crop nutrient benefits
An agronomy manager says the wet spring followed by dry conditions in Missouri and Illinois have led to mid-season nutrient deficiencies.
Jason Haegele, with Winfield United tells Brownfield Ag News, “Going back a couple of weeks the V10 to V14 window, in Missouri specifically, nitrogen was the number one nutrient that was limiting in corn along with sulfur, zinc and potassium.”
He says similar losses were seen in Illinois corn. As for any micro-nutrient deficiencies, “If a grower is going to invest in a fungicide application, with micronutrients having a low application rate, we have the opportunity to get those into the tank with the fungicide for corn. And that would be true for soybeans as well.”
Haegele says stressful weather conditions – heat, humidity and rain – can lead to fungal diseases and growers need to consider that fungicides also benefit plant health even if there’s not a lot of disease. He says tissue sampling later in the growing season will help growers learn more about their crop nutrient needs looking ahead to 2021.
