Egg producer adjusts to COVID-19 challenges

Egg demand skyrocketed during the coronavirus pandemic and producers had to adjust to meet the demand.

Sam Krouse is vice president of business development for Indiana-based MPS Egg Farms.

“In the early days of the pandemic we were seeing a 100 percent demand spike that lasted for about a week,” he says. “After that for about two months as people were staying home consistently, we had about a 30 percent increase in demand.”

He says the business was running overtime to keep up with demand.

“I think a lot of that increased demand was by people cooking at home and finding that eggs were a pretty great source of protein and easy nutrients and easy to cook,” he says.

Krouse says the number one priority during this time is keeping employees safe.

“Like many companies we haven’t been free of the impact of COVID-19,” he says. “We have had some positives among our employees but thanks to a lot of the measures we were able to put into place we haven’t seen those situations spread.”

The biggest takeaway, Krouse, says is the importance of being able to adapt to a situation and communicate with customers, employees, and vendors to keep the supply chain moving.

MPS Egg Farms is the eighth largest egg producer in the country.
