Congress to discuss next aid package, spending bills

Congress plans to discuss spending proposals important to farmers.  Senate Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts told Agri-Pulse his staff is working with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue on a bill for additional COVID-19 relief and that there is a “double-digit number” of new ideas for the livestock sector being considered for the next relief package.  Some Senators are also working to expand USDA’s authority under the Commodity Credit Corporation

The House will start debate on appropriations bills for fiscal year 2021, which starts October 1st.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she expects to pass four bills that would fund USDA and four other agencies.

The House Ag Committee will have a hearing Tuesday afternoon as an overview of the Farmers to families Food Box Program. The House also has a Select Committee on the Coronavirus Committee hearing Tuesday.  The Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will discuss U.S-China economic competition Wednesday.
