South Dakota crop development ahead of normal

Crops are developing faster than normal in South Dakota.

The latest USDA crop progress report says as of Sunday, 16 percent of corn is silking compared to the five-year average of 13 percent.

Forty-nine percent of soybeans are blooming, well ahead of last year’s 24 percent and 39 percent normally.

Eighty-two percent of corn and 77 percent of soybeans are rated in good to excellent condition.

Winter wheat harvest is underway at five percent complete.  Seventy-four percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

For spring wheat, 95 percent has headed and 59 percent is called good to excellent.
