Hay acres down in 2020

Producers planted slightly less of all types of hay in 2020 than in 2019.

The USDA has this year’s planted area for all types of hay at 52.381 million acres, compared to 52.425 million a year ago, with alfalfa and alfalfa mixture planting also posting a year to year decline at 16.352 million acres, compared to 16.743 million last year. All other forage acres, including alfalfa and mixtures, were pegged at 36.029 million acres, 347,000 more than the year before.

The USDA’s next set of production numbers is out July 10th.
