Iowa state climatologist discusses recent rains and chances for more

Recent rains in Iowa have been beneficial to most farmers, although some areas received excessive amounts and others received less than what was hoped for.

Iowa state climatologist Justin Glisan says more rain could be on the way this week.

“If we look at the seven-day, what we call QPF—Quantitative Precipitation Forecast—it’s anywhere from a half-inch up to an inch-and-a-quarter across the state, with, of course, the drier conditions in western Iowa,” Glisan says.

He says the July forecast is currently calling for warmer conditions in Iowa.

“It’s not so clear, though, on the precipitation signal. We’re classified as what’s called EC, which is equal chance of above, below or near average conditions.”
