Illinois Farm Bureau recognizes support for pollinators

Lauren Lurkins, Director of Environmental Policy tell Brownfield they compiled information and submitted it to the US Fish and Wildlife Service for consideration when the agency decides whether or not to add the Monarch Butterfly to the endangered species list.
“If it were listed as an endangered species, that would impact a ton of stuff including production agriculture.”
She says Illinois farmers across the state are playing their part to help pollinators by putting their private property into pollinator habitat.
“Close to a million acres in a variety of variety of programs. The bulk of that comes from the USDA Conservation Reserve Program at over 850,000 acres put into pollinator habitat.”
Lurkins says farmers can continue to help pollinators by being mindful of habitats while mowing and spraying.
National Pollinator Week runs June 22 – 28th.
