USTR confident China will meet cotton purchase obligations

Like many of the other commodities, the nation’s cotton producers are watching and waiting to see of China meets its purchase obligations set in the phase one trade deal.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says he’s confident they will.  “They’ve bought a fair amount of cotton,” he says.  “Which is particularly as an indicator, because their apparel business is slow.  For obvious reasons because of the COVID-19.  We believe they’ve bought a fair amount and they have a fair amount additional to go.”

Lighthizer testified in front of the House Ways and Means Committee earlier this week.

According to the latest Export Sales report from the USDA, China was the largest purchaser of cotton this past week and the largest export destination.
