Lighthizer gives update on China, USMCA

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has acknowledged the difficult U.S.-China relationship in a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on trade. Lighthizer testified, “It’s gotten more complicated because of actions that they have taken recently. It has security implications and cyber implications. It has business implications. It has human rights applications. And, I view my space, my lane, as being the trade lane.

Lighthizer lauded the passage of the USMCA trade agreement which goes into effect July 1st. And he said much more is in the works, “We have active negotiations ongoing with the United Kingdom. We will very soon commence negotiations with Kenya. And, finally, we have active engagements on trade with numerous other countries.”

Lightizer says the U.S. is prepared to fully enforce USMCA and will take action early and often in the case of violations.
