Groups send letter to Trump urging U.S. to stick with Phase One

Dozens of ag groups including the American Soybean Association are urging the Trump Administration to give China more time to fulfill its phase one commitments.

ASA president Bill Gordon tells Brownfield both countries have made promises that need to be kept.

“We need to move forward with these promised amounts and these dollar figures. Our prices are low with COVID and all the other things that have been going on, and the shining light could be and should be this phase one agreement with China.”

The southwest Minnesota farmer says the groups sent a letter to the President this week as tensions rise between the U.S. and China.

“Look at the geopolitical stuff with Hong Kong, and different things around the world, and we just wanted to send a reminder to the President that we understand there’s bigger things playing sometimes in the world of politics. But there was a promise made to American agriculture and farmers, and we’re a key part of this economy.”

Nearly 200 organizations and companies signed the letter.  Among the ag groups are American Farm Bureau, ADM, CHS, Cobank, Compeer Financial, Corteva Agriscience, Dairy Farmers of America, Growth Energy, Land O’Lakes, National Association of Wheat Growers, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Chicken Council, National Corn Growers Association, National Pork Producers Council, POET, Renewable Fuels Association, Tyson Foods, the U.S. Dairy Export Council, U.S. Grains Council, U.S. Meat Export Federation, U.S. Soybean Export Council, and USA Rice.
