Winter wheat production down on year

The USDA sees 2020 winter wheat production at 1.266 billion bushels. That is up 1% from May’s projection, but down 3% from the 2019 total of 1.304 billion bushels, with the department expecting year to year reductions in harvested area and average yield. Still, if realized, the USDA’s current average yield guess of 52.1 bushels per acre would be the third largest on record, even with crop condition ratings well below a year ago. The USDA’s current average yield guess for 2020 is 52.1 bushels per acre, compared to 51.7 in May and 53.6 for 2019, while harvested area is projected at 24.275 million acres, compared to 24.327 million a year ago. As of Sunday, 7% of the U.S. winter wheat crop is harvested, matching the five-year average pace.

By class, this year’s hard red winter crop is seen at 742.939 million bushels, with soft red winter at 297.343 million and white winter at a combined 225.418 million bushels.
