Ohio to provide funding for junior county fairs

Funding will be provided to local fair boards planning junior fairs in Ohio this year.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lieutenant Governor John Husted, Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof, and House Speaker Larry Householder sent a letter to fair board members today (Wednesday), saying funding will be available to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 among fair participants, visitors, and staff.

Each fair that conducts a 2020 junior fair will receive $50,000 to use on safety measures. Fairs that do not have a junior fair will receive $15,000 to help next year’s fair be conducted safely.

Fair boards that have cancelled their 2020 fair can apply for a new date with the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

A county and individual fair fact sheet says “while COVID-19 made it impossible to hold fairs in the way we have in the past, they are of such importance to communities that every effort should be made to preserve the Junior Fair competitions and exhibits, as well as the open class events and competitions.
