Missouri farmer got all crops planted after zero last year
A northwest Missouri farmer who was unable to plant any crops last year because of flooding has gotten all his crops in this year. Richard Oswald farms in Atchison County, Missouri, tells Brownfield Ag News, “We got done before the weather got wetter. It was kind of dry. And, of course, we had three-fourths of our farmland flooded last year and didn’t even have the opportunity to plant.”
Oswald says they’ve had to deal with a lot of sand and silt in some of his fields and he’s going with more soybeans this year, “Partly because the cost of planting corn is pretty much unchanged and the price is down.”
Oswald says they also had to deal with a lot of old weeds that came up last summer when it was still muddy and going with more beans gave them a little more time.
He says they’re in good shape with levees repaired but with these heavy recent rains he’s keeping a close eye on the Missouri River.
