Sign-up opens today for USDA coronavirus assistance

Farmers can begin signing up for the USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program today.

The program aims to provide vital assistance to producers of eligible commodities who have suffered a 5% or greater price decline or who had market supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19.

Undersecretary Bill Northey says they have tried to make the process as easy as possible.

“We will have an actual form that will be on there and a payment calculator as well. So, folks can go in, be able to see in the boxes what they need to put in there, go ahead and precalculate the payment and then it will populate a form.”

He says producers will then need to mail or email the form to the Farm Service Agency or drop it by their local office.

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue has indicated that farmers could begin receiving checks in early June.
