USDA lowers 2019 corn, soybean production totals

2019 U.S. corn and soybean production was slightly less than what the USDA reported in January. The downward revision follows a resurvey of producers in Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota, and the corn number could see another downward revision because of unharvested acreage in North Dakota, where another resurvey will be conducted later this month.

The corn total was lowered 28.9 million bushels to 13.663 billion, with the average yield down 0.2 bushels per acre at 167.8 bushels per acre and harvested area 60,000 acres less than initially reported at 81.422 million.

Soybean production was reduced 1.74 million bushels to 3.558 billion, with the average yield unchanged at 47.4 bushels per acre and harvested area down 20,000 acres at 75.001 million.

Because of the changes to corn and soybean production, the USDA also revised the December 1st, 2019 grain stocks totals.

The USDA’s next set of production estimates is out June 12th.
