Report says China wants to rework trade deal; Trump says he’s not interested

A report by China’s state-run media says some “hawkish voices” within the Chinese government are calling for the phase one trade agreement with the U.S. to be invalidated and renegotiated.

China’s Global Times says President Trump’s criticism of China over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak has created a “tsunami of anger” among government trade officials.  The media outlet says there has also been a growing dissatisfaction with the agreement with some officials arguing that China has compromised too much.

At his coronavirus press briefing on Monday, President Trump said he has no interest in reworking the trade agreement.

“No, not at all, not even a little bit,” Trump said “I’m not interested. We signed a deal. I’ve heard that too—they’d like to reopen the trade talks to make it a better deal for them.”
