Iowa farmer says some soybean replant is likely

A north central Iowa farmer says they’re probably going to have to replant some soybeans after temperatures dipped into the upper 20’s over the weekend.

But Chris Edgington tells Brownfield the damage appears to be spotty, even within fields.

“You’ll have a few dead ones and a few live ones scattered all over—some in a group and then not,” Edgington says. “So that’s what will make it a real challenge–where do you start and where do you stop. It’s not like you’re gong to have a distinct line.”

Edgington says he’s not worried about the newly emerged corn.

“The corn is either just not up or spiking through or, at best, two leaf. So the corn will be fine.”

He says they’ve also been very dry over the past month.

“We haven’t really had any substantial rain since Easter. So we would gladly welcome a nice, soaking rain here this week if we could get that.”

Edgington farms near St. Ansgar, Iowa.
