Cargill staff to be paid while Milwaukee meat plant sits idle

Cargill officials say their Milwaukee, Wisconsin workforce will be paid during time off caused by the spread of coronavirus.  The Cargill Meat Solutions processing plant was temporarily idled starting Wednesday at the direction of the City of Milwaukee Health Department because of an undisclosed number of employees that tested positive for the virus.

Cargill issued a statement saying employees who are sick or have been in contact with anyone that has COVID-19 should stay home, and they are offering up to 80 additional paid leave hours in addition to their regular pay.

So far, Cargill officials have not been available to discuss the closure or a possible re-opening date for Milwaukee or other plants such as Schuyler, Nebraska, which has been shut down since Monday.

About 200 employees process fresh beef, ground beef, and private label products for grocers.
