Senators call for SNAP support in fourth COVID-19 relief package

A group of Democratic lawmakers is asking Senate leadership to address the needs of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants in the fourth coronavirus relief package.

In a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the senators say SNAP is the nation’s first line of defense against hunger and is proven to help lift millions of American families and children out of poverty.

The senators are asking to increase the maximum SNAP benefit for all recipients by increasing the thrifty food plan by at least 15 percent to all households. They’re also asking to increase the monthly minimum SNAP benefit from $16 to $30, suspend the rules proposed by USDA that would weaken eligibility, and provide additional options and investments to support delivery for the program.

Senators that signed the letter include Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, and Sherrod Brown of Ohio.
