Muscatine City Council to discuss reopening plans at tonight’s meeting

Muscatine City Hall

The Muscatine City Council will conduct a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, with two items on the agenda including a request for a closed session. The agenda is available on the City of Muscatine website.

The first item on the agenda will be a discussion regarding the reopening of city services, including buildings, to the general public. Muscatine County was one of 22 Iowa counties that had the COVID-19 restrictions extended to May 15 by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds in her April 27 proclamation.

Staff from the Buildings and Grounds division of Public Works along with contract employees have been doing enhanced cleaning of all buildings during the restricted access. City staff has continued working regular hours during the restrictions to provide the services expected by Muscatine residents, some have been working split shifts, and others are working from home when possible.

The City extended their COVID-19 Policy through Friday, May 15, 2020, in accordance with the Governor’s proclamation.

The request to enter closed session is per Iowa Code 21.5(c) to discuss strategy with counsel in matters that are presently in litigation or where litigation is imminent where its disclosure would be likely to prejudice or disadvantage the position of the governmental body in that litigation.

The City Council is complying with guidelines from local, state, and federal officials, and conducting meetings by conference calls. The open portion of the April 28 meeting is available to the public. The Council will leave the call for the closed session but the public portion will remain available until the Council returns from the closed session. No action is on the agenda for the matters being discussed in the closed session Wednesday.
