North Dakota corn harvest lingers into planting season

Some farmers in the Upper Midwest are busy harvesting corn, not planting it.

Peterson Farms Seed president Carl Peterson says a lot of crop had to sit through the winter after a terribly wet fall in parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota.

“I think there’s been quite a bit of progress on the harvest. Obviously when you have to harvest in the spring that makes it challenging to get the crop (out and the next) crop in again.”

On his own farm north of Fargo, he tells Brownfield they tried to harvest some corn over the weekend.

“We can’t yet (because) we need some more dry weather. So there’s going to be some significant shifts in what growers’ plans are as we go forward. It’s going to be a really interesting stretch here.”

Peterson calls the crop being harvested this spring pretty good overall.  But he says while some corn picked up significant test weight over the winter, there are other fields where they’re not really seeing that.
