Bipartisan bill would expand opportunities for biofuels
A bipartisan bill was introduced today that would provide funding for installing and converting fuel pump infrastructure to deliver higher blends of ethanol and biodiesel.
The Clean Fuels Deployment Act of 2020 was introduced by Representatives Abby Finkenauer of Iowa, Angie Craig of Minnesota, Don Bacon of Nebraska, and Roger Marshall of Kansas.
The bill would authorize $500 million over five years and direct the US Secretary of Transportation to award funding to state, local, and tribal governments to give consumers more choices at the pumps.
The bill is supported by the National Corn Growers Association, Renewable Fuels Association, National Biodiesel Board, Growth Energy, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Soybean Association, and Iowa Biodiesel Board.
Kurt Kovarik, vice president of federal affairs for the National Biodiesel Board, says the legislation would help expand critical infrastructure and increase consumer access to cleaner, better fuels.
National Corn Growers Association President Kevin Ross says expanding infrastructure for higher blends will help increase future demand for farmers and ensure biofuels will continue to be include in federal efforts.
Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor says the legislation offers a roadmap for the next wave of growth that will revitalize rural communities and expand cleaner and more affordable options at the pump.
Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, says once the coronavirus pandemic is behind us and economic recovery is underway, expanding infrastructure for higher biofuel blends will be critical to the long-term future of the renewable fuels industry.
