Grain farmers walking a “tight line” for crop marketing

A panel of farmers during a US Soybean Export Council virtual summit this week shared their struggles with grain marketing.

“I think it’s going to be a very tight line that we walk this year on doing our marketing.”

Southeast Illinois farmer Doug Winter says after looking at the corn and soybean price ratio, he plans to shift some of his lower producing corn acres to soybeans.

Minnesota farmer Joel Schreurs says he does not have as much of this year’s crop sold at this point as he would like to.

“We were kind of looking forward to that rally in the spring, but then with the COVID-19 issue that never came. So, we kind of have to wait and see how this works out.”

Iowa farmer Brian Kemp says about half of his 2019 crop is still unpriced at this point as he too was anticipating a bump in the market during planting. He says it looks like if there is a rally, it won’t happen until after planting season.
