Illinois 4-H discussing flexibility of 2020 shows

Illinois 4-H staff are discussing the potential flexibility of spring and summer shows to comply with COVID-19 social distancing regulations.

Illinois State 4-H Director Lisa Diaz tells Brownfield as University of Illinois Extension events and county fairs begin to cancel; they are thinking of creative ways to keep 4-Her’s involved, including digital opportunities.

“We know how hard our 4-H members have worked in preparation for the many summer events and we are committed to being ready for all scenarios so there is that continuity of experience.”

To this point, all University of Illinois Extension affiliated events have been cancelled through May 31st and all overnight 4-H events are cancelled through the end of July which includes 4-H Memorial Camp, Citizenship Washington Focus and Illini Summer Academies.

In comparison to general project competitions like public speaking and veterinary medicine, Diaz says there is more flexibility for livestock shows on a county basis because they are not up against the same state fair qualification deadline.

“If a fair were to cancel, especially in the animal show category we would have the option to look at later dates as one of our possibilities.”

Diaz says Illinois 4-H members and volunteers have continued to shine through this pandemic by helping out in their communities and learning critical life skills through their projects while at home.
