NAMI says keeping plants operating top goal
The president of the North American Meat Institute (NAMI), which represents packers and processors, says she’s grateful for all the efforts members are taking to keep workers safe. Julie Anna Potts tells Brownfield Ag News while there are cases of COVID-19 in some plants, sanitation measures are above and beyond and sick workers leave those plants.
Potts tells Brownfield the number-one goal is to keep plants operational, “Our producers of hogs and cattle are hurting as well and we have the obligation to do everything in our power to keep the plants running so we can continue to move animals through the system.”
Potts says packers and processors already follow strict sanitation guidelines and have stepped those up according to CDC and local regulations during the pandemic, “We are approaching this as a well-informed and well-prepared industry over the last several weeks putting all of these measures in place to ensure that in the plant we’re doing everything we can to keep people healthy and safe.”
Potts assures consumers that there is NO risk of getting COVID-19 in meat products and there is plenty of meat in supply. Potts calls meat industry workers “heroes” for keeping America fed in these difficult times.
