Michigan Farm Bureau assists state food pantries

Michigan Farm Bureau rapidly raised enough money to donate a million meals to families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Farm Bureau’s Noelle Nachreiner tells Brownfield the Million Meal Challenge was met quickly. “We kicked the campaign off last Monday and really just promoted it via social media and also sending emails out to our Farm Bureau agents, and asking them to share it with their clients, (and) sending it out to our county Farm Bureau Presidents.”

Nachreiner says families all over the state will benefit from the Million Meal Challenge fundraiser. “One hundred percent of those funds will go to the seven regional food banks throughout Michigan, and those seven regional food banks serve all 83 counties of Michigan and more than three-thousand local food pantries and other hunger relief agencies.”

Nachreiner says farmers, insurance agents, members, employees,  county Farm Bureaus, and Farm Bureau Companies gathered over $183,000 in under two weeks.

Michigan families will also benefit from a separate food aid program. The USDA announced Michigan is the first state approved for the Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) program, created by the Families First Coronavirus Act (FFCRA), signed by President Trump. The special EBT program provides assistance to families of children eligible for free or reduced-price meals dealing with school closures.
