NCBA requests swift action from USDA to help cattle producers

The National Cattleman’s Beef Association is requesting immediate action from the USDA to provide relief to cattle producers impacted by COVID-19.

NCBA President Marty Smith applauds the passage of the CARES act, saying “It is now incumbent upon Secretary Purdue and his team at USDA to make sure the relief made available is speedily delivered to cattle producers nationwide.”

In a letter to US Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue Friday, NCBA and 45 state cattle groups remind USDA that US cattle production accounts for 18% of total cash receipts of ag commodities. The letter states that NCBA believes economic assistance for cattle producers should not only prioritize financial loss due to COVID-19 but also be market oriented, not disrupt market signals and not be a permanent subsidy program.

Smith says they stand ready to assist USDA to make sure action is taken as quickly and equitably as possible.
