Indiana Farm Bureau members are giving back during COVID-19

Indiana Farm Bureau members are doing what they can to support their communities during the coronavirus pandemic.

Roger Locker, noticing a shortage of eggs in local grocery stores, purchased 300 dozen eggs from Minnich Poultry and will give them away free of charge Friday with the help of some 4-H members.

“We’re giving them a way tomorrow from 3-6 pm, we’re limiting three dozen per family, and we’re having people stay in their cars,” he says. “All the volunteers have face masks and gloves and we’re going to have people drive through my parking lot and have two lines.”

The eggs will be handed out at Locker’s Touch of Country Gifts in Portland, Indiana. Eggs will be delivered to seniors who are home bound by Triple Taxi Service.

The Jay County Farm Bureau member says it has been incredible to see the community come together.

“We have a saying here: we are Jay County,” he says. “We mean that, and we help each other. It’s phenomenal how much people in this county help each other.”

Miami County Farm Bureau Member Sharon Dillman has sewn more than three dozen masks for her local community, including her daughter who works in healthcare.

“My daughter came in one day from work and said that they were running short on masks and they needed them for the nurses and the staff and asked would I be willing to sew some masks for her,” she says.

Dillman says she wanted to give back during this time of uncertainty and it’s brought her joy to be able to help in some way.

There are several other Indiana Farm Bureau members helping their communities.

Charlie Houin of Marshall County donated spare masks and chemical suits to local hospitals in need of protective gear.

Aleta Crowe of Green County donated fabric to local volunteers who are sewing masks to donate to health care workers in her community.

Lydia Wolheter of LaGrange County and her two daughters have been sewing masks for a local nursing home that needs supplies.

Jeanette Merritt of Miami County, with the help of her son, is sewing hospital gowns for a local nursing home unable to purchase any right now.
