Michigan Ag Department provides coronavirus updates
The Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture says officials are having daily meetings to coordinate efforts while Michigan is under a state of emergency in response to coronavirus.
Gary McDowell tells Brownfield the department has a very robust emergency response team that works tirelessly to protect food and animal safety at all times.
“We know that’s our responsibility, to make sure for the consumer that Michigan food is safe, wholesome, and the same goes for our livestock industries too.”
March has been declared Michigan Agriculture Month and McDowell says so far, activities will continue.
“As of right now, nothing has been canceled but it’s a day-to-day situation here.”
The department and ag groups are also taking time to highlight the numerous commodities produced in the state through social media updates with #MIAgMonth.
The Michigan Milk Producers Association announced this week their annual meeting will be closed to a limited number of attendees and the Michigan Wheat Program has canceled next week’s annual meeting because of coronavirus concerns.
Many events on Michigan State University’s campus are being canceled or postponed and the university is not scheduling new events with 100 attendees or more. An individual being monitored for coronavirus has been linked to MSU and in-person classes are suspended until April 20th.
