US pork exports increasing in Australia and New Zealand

US pork exports are making big gains in Australia and New Zealand and the US Meat Export Federation is looking to expand sales further.

Sabrina Yin, regional director for Southeast Asia, says the tight labor market and increasing raw material prices make US pork products especially attractive.  “We try to look for opportunities to introduce a suitable buyer or suitable store that they can utilize or feature the item,” she says.

In 2019, US pork exports to Australia totaled more than 105,000 metric tons, an increase of 31 percent over the previous year.  Value climbed 33 percent to $302 million.  Exports to New Zealand were up 38 percent in volume from 2018 and up 45 percent in value to $37.2 million.
