Health officials: Coronavirus not a concern with coming Shanghai Chinese Orchestra concert

Shanghai Chinese Orchestra

The Muscatine community will be welcoming the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and the Zhejiang Shaoju Opera Theatre for their fifth annual new year concert. The Orchestra and Opera will provide a wonderful performance of traditional Chinese music to our community free of charge on Thursday, January 30th from 7–9:30 p.m. at the Muscatine High School Auditorium at 2705 Cedar Street, Muscatine, IA 52761.

Due to the rapidly evolving situation with the coronavirus we want to inform our Muscatine County area that neither of the performance groups have traveled to the United States from the areas in China most affected by the virus, Hubei Province, China, including Wuhan which are on lockdown and not allowing any travelers in or out of their Province. The performers coming to Muscatine are traveling from the Shanghai and Zhejiang Province.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with Public Health officials have mechanisms in place to ensure safety precautions are taken when individuals are exiting China as well as entering the U.S.

Although there are cases outside of China, the risk is low to the general population. No additional precautions are recommended at this time beyond the simple daily hygienic precautions that everyone should always take. This includes effective hand hygiene. It is currently flu and respiratory disease season, and flu activity is still high and expected to continue for a number of weeks. The CDC and Public Health officials recommend getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if prescribed.
