Carl Tiecke Jr.

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Carl Tiecke Jr., 90, of Muscatine, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at Genesis East Medical Center, in Davenport.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2020, at Zion Lutheran Church. Reverend Steven Cauley will officiate. Pallbearers will be his six grandchildren. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Online condolences: www.wittichfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.

Carl was born on October 19, 1929, in Muscatine where he lived all his life, the son of Carl and Emma Dammann Tiecke Sr. Carl graduated from Muscatine High School in 1947. He was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Zion Lutheran Church. Carl married Dorothy Henning on November 7, 1948, and was married for 64 years and 11 months until her death in October 2013.

He enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1948 with the 34th Division 133rd Infantry Regiment, 1st Batt Company C-1. Carl qualified as a Gunner for the 60 mm Mortar Squads and was a marksman with the M-1 Garand Rifle. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and received an Honorable discharge in 1959.

Carl was taught the plastering trade from his father and became a self-employed plastering contractor from 1940-1970. He was appointed Muscatine City Building & Zoning Administrator from 1970-1978 and became one of Iowa’s first certified building inspectors. After successfully passing all three of the necessary exams for real estate valuation and the State Department of Revenue exam, he was appointed Muscatine County Assessor in 1978. Shortly thereafter, the City and County Assessor’s two offices were combined under his guidance where he retired in 1991.

His faith, wife, and family were of the utmost importance to him. Carl thoroughly enjoyed hunting, particularly duck and goose hunting in Iowa and Oregon. He also enjoyed fishing wherever there were fish to be caught.

Carl was a past member of Brick Layers, Cement Finishers & Plasters Local Union, International Conference of Building Officials, and the International Association of Assessing Officers. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl. Carl was also a past member of the Izaak Walton League and the N.R.A.

Those left to honor his memory include his two sons, Clark Tiecke and wife, Carolyn, of Salem, Oregon, and Trent Tiecke and his life partner, Keith Binkley, of Sky Forest, California; one daughter, Denise Cooney, and husband, Al, of Muscatine; six grandchildren, Jessica Shields, Jared Tiecke, Chad Tiecke, Tyler Tiecke, Todd Cooney (Ashley), Amy Kircher (Jeremy); and four great-grandchildren, Koen Tiecke, Savannah Shields, Ethan Cooney, and Elise Kircher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; his parents; one brother, Robert; and a sister Jackwyn Opel.
