Join Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge and Louisa County Conservation on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon at Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, to help with monarch butterfly research. Get ready to search for, catch, and tag monarch butterflies!
Monarch butterflies cannot survive our cold Iowa winters, instead they travel up to 3,000 miles south to forests high in the mountains of Mexico. We will be assisting with monarch research by catching the migrating butterflies, placing a small tag on their wing, recording their information and releasing them to continue their long journey. These tags help researchers learn about the population and migration of monarch butterflies. During the program there will be a monarch game and craft for younger participants to enjoy.
This program is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome to attend, but those under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult.
