Though ground has not been broken on the Muscatine Community Y expansion project, progress is being made. According to Executive Director Bret Olson, an architect has been hired. A construction company is expected to be secured in March. Ground breaking on the new addition is anticipated for either June or July of 2016.
The construction will take place in stages. Olson states that the first stage is anticipated to be the most disruptive to Y members. A temporary entrance will need to be established and clearly marked to help make the process as smooth as possible for members.
Phase one will include the front part of the building. Plans for this portion of the building include a wellness center, teen center, and kid’s adventure place, which will cater to pre-school to lower elementary aged children. Completion of this portion is anticipated to take six to nine months.
The second phase of the project will include redesigning the current track into a gymnasium and the addition of new exercise rooms.
The total cost of the entire project is estimated at $7.25 million. Donations are now being taken for the project. Current fundraising efforts have collected $5.1 million to date, approximately 70% or the total.
