What’s your answer to the infamous question?
How many times have you heard “What’s for dinner tonight?” Too many times to count, right? How about this answer: FUN. “We’re having fun for dinner tonight.”
That probably can’t be sustained for every dinner experience, but why not make a point to not just eat together, but have fun together? A family with an artistic child had this story to tell about a meal that included mashed potatoes. As everyone was eating and talking, this child began shaping the potatoes on the plate with a spoon. Before long, the shape became a comfortable-looking little couch, complete with rounded arms, high back, and cushions. It became the focus of everyone at the table to watch the couch potato form on the child’s plate. Was that child playing with food? Yeah. Was it fun and a good memory? You bet.
Talking about your day is always great table talk, but if you need ideas to get an out-of-the box conversation started at your table, here are a few suggestions:
• What would you do if school/work was canceled tomorrow and you could do anything you wanted?
• If you could live in any home on a television series, what would it be?
• If you could start a new family tradition, what would it be?
In honor of Family Meals month, Hy-Vee’s Market Café is offering a free kid’s meal with adult meal purchase every day, every meal, all month. Look for the container holding printed Conversation Starters on the table to help get your family’s conversation going.
For a fast dinner at home, keep the food simple so the stress level when starting the meal is minimal. From a dietitian’s perspective, I recommend always including at least one vegetable, raw or cooked, to balance out the nutritional value. Hy-Vee’s kitchen has some ideas for making fast meals starting with a rotisserie chicken. Stop by the Hy-Vee Dietitian Center at the front of the HealthMarket for a copy of “Frozen Foods Make Fast Meals” for ideas and recipes. Look for the “Ultimate Fast Dinner” to have a hearty dinner for 6 on the table for under $10 and in 20 minutes!
Then what do you have time for? Some fun!
Post a photo or comment of your family meal to #hyveefamilymeals and Hy-Vee will donate $1 per post, up to $100,000, to Meals from the Heartland.
