Libraries provide a place for the people of a community to learn, grow, and explore. At West Liberty Library, that is their focus. Library staff listen to what people want and do their best to help every library patron find what they are looking for.
“We want feedback from those who use the library,” said Library Director Janette McMahon. “We ask, ‘What do patrons want to see and learn?’”
West Liberty Library caters to young and old with their extensive collection, which includes books, audio books, videos, and video games. They even have a gaming room with video game consoles. They also offer access to many online resources. Additionally, 25% of their collection is in Spanish, appealing to those who enjoy books and movies in that language.
Any Muscatine County resident is welcome to sign up for a library card in order to utilize West Liberty Library’s resources. All that is required is a piece of mail confirming a home address. Parents or guardians need to accompany their children ages 16 and under.
Along with their collection of media, West Liberty Library hosts a variety of adult and children programming. On Wednesdays they host toddler story time, featuring a new theme each week. They also host various programs for school-age children when they have early dismissal from school. They offer family events for parents and children to enjoy together. For adults, there are book clubs and other events to attend. This month, the library is hosting “An Evening Celebrating Bob Dylan with Tom Nothnagle” on January 27. This event promises to be a fun hour of music and stories about recent Nobel Prize for Literature laureate Bob Dylan.
One program the library staff are especially proud of is the Bette Akers Creative Space. This space is home to programs such as embroidery, photo editing, drawing, and more. The library staff teach some of the classes, but they also partner with the area Arts Council to bring in guest instructors on a variety of art topics. West Liberty Library is the first library in Muscatine County with a space dedicated to out-of-the-box learning opportunities.
