On February 12th and 13th, the MHS Speech and Debate team competed in the East Iowa District tournament, which was held at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids.
The competition was between all teams in the East Iowa District of the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA)
The District tournament is an important tournament, as it is used to determine which students qualify to attend the NSDA National tournament, which will be held this summer from June 12th – 17th, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The MHS team won the speech sweepstakes for the first time in 13 years. The team also qualified three students to represent the state of Iowa in the national tournament this June. This is the first time in at least 13 years three students have qualified.
The team of Karissa Burton and Bria Holthe qualified in Duo Interpretation. Ezekial Ellis qualified in Dramatic Interpretation.
The team also qualified two different alternates. Which means, if another team is unable to attend, they would go in their place. The freshman team of Jeremiah Daniels and Wyatt Mason qualified as top alternate in Duo Interpretation. Senior Abbie Zoller also qualified as alternate in Dramatic Interpretation.
Other members of the team ranked highly in their categories as well. Freshman Jessica Ahluwalia was the only freshman to make it to Semi Finals. Freshman Wyatt Foor made it to final rounds in Humorous Interpretation. Senior Lori Sutton competed as well and got the best scores she has gotten all year.
According to Coach Davis Schrock, “I cannot ask for a better team and can’t wait to see what Nationals holds for us in Salt Lake City, Utah this June!”
