The Muscatine Area Council on Youth Leadership (MACYL) is pleased to announce that Claudia Putnam is the recipient of its 2017 Visionary Youth Leadership Award. Each year, in addition to recognizing young leaders, MACYL presents this award to an adult who shows a special commitment to the well-being and advancement of youth in the communities in which MACYL is active.

Claudia Putnam is passionate about livestock and helping young people to develop their strengths and express their own passions. Putnam has guided hundreds of young people as a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America in Louisa County and as a 4-H leader for close to 20 years in Muscatine County.  As Putnam works with youth from varying backgrounds and with differing abilities, her focus is on discovering strengths, building confidence, and developing the ability to think creatively. She generously gives her time, expertise and goodwill to provide young people with opportunities they might not otherwise have. With her encouragement, young people learn by doing and build strong leadership, citizenship, and communication skills. Claudia pays forward a meaningful lesson she learned from mentors: “Find your passion, and if it can’t be your vocation, make it your avocation” is advice she has passed on to countless youth.

Putnam grew up in rural New York State and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science at Cornell University. In 1985, she and her husband, Dan, moved to a small farm in eastern Iowa, which Claudia describes as “our own little piece of heaven.” That move set the stage for the countless contributions Claudia has made to the communities and youth in this area.

MACYL congratulates Claudia Putnam and thanks her for her support of youth development and her contributions in our community.

MACYL is a chapter of the National Council on Youth Leadership (NCYL), an organization whose mission is to identify and recognize outstanding young people, provide them with opportunities to network with each other and to enhance their leadership skills.  Students from the following high schools participate in MACYL: Columbus Community, Durant, Louisa-Muscatine, Muscatine, Tipton, Wapello, West Liberty and Wilton.
