Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre presents its nineteenth annual Puppets and Pastries: Dessert Theatre For Adults, Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 at 8:00 p.m. Here’s an opportunity for lovers of puppet theatre to see cutting edge puppetry directed towards adults while listening to music and savoring delectable desserts, including the Acapulco Bakery’s famous tres leches cake. The event takes place at Owl Glass Puppetry Center, 319 North Calhoun, West Liberty, Iowa. Eulenspiegel elves will transform the Center into a softly lit bistro for the weekend. Tickets are still only $15 if you buy them ahead and $20.00 at the door. Tickets include desserts and beverages.
The centerpiece of the evening will be Girls On The Roof, adapted from Iowa Poet Laureate Mary Swander’s book-length narrative poem about a mother and daughter stuck on top of the roof of a cafe on the banks of the Mississippi River for three days during the 1993 flood. While they are there, the women discover that they have both had an affair with the same man.
Swander reads poems from her book while puppeteer Monica Leo brings the scenes alive through the use of hand, rod, and shadow puppets. This show is filled with old-time music, romance, intrigue, humor, folklore, the flora and fauna of the Mississippi River basin, and an unforgettable cast of characters.
Fans of mesmerizing storyteller Susan Short Gilbert and her prize-winning play, Catchin’ the Babies, will be thrilled to be treated to one of her unforgettable stories. Rounding out the evening will be music by songbird Laura Kittrell along with her husband, Al, and Greg and Jean Thompson. Add delicious desserts, beverages, and laughter for an unforgettable evening.
