Steve worked his way through college and graduated twice from Iowa State University earning degrees in Microbiology and Food Technology. He was a member of Adelante Fraternity where he was social chairman.

He met Arlen Long in chemistry class at ISU; a spark was ignited. They were married on July 24, 1965, in Boone, Iowa. They recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary with family.

He pursued a long career at Grain Processing Corporation where he was in technical starch sales. He retired in 2005.
