The Muscatine Muskie Boys Basketball team begins their playoff journey on Friday, February 24 at Muscatine High School. The Muskies are led by the leading scorer in Class 4A, Joe Wieskamp. The 6’6” junior guard is averaging 31.2 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game. At press time, their opponent has yet to be determined. The Muskies will face the winner of Lin Mar and Iowa City High.
Muscatine earned a first round by in Class 4A substate 5 and with a win on Friday night will advance to play Iowa City West, the number one team in the state, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. Should Muscatine advance and play West, it would be a matchup much of the state would like to see. West features four-star basketball recruit and future teammate of Wieskamp at the University of Iowa, Connor McCaffery, and his sophomore brother, Patrick. The McCaffery brothers are the sons of University of Iowa Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery. The Trojans have been ranked #1 wire to wire in class 4A and are the favorite to win the state title. The matchup of top players in the state should be a lot of fun to watch.
Muscatine matches up ideally with Iowa City High. They defeated the Little Hawks 70-46 in the season opening game. Lin Mar defeated City High 68-54 and defeated Bettendorf early in the season. They are led by Trey Hutcheson, a 6’5” player who averages 15.2 points per game and 6.7 rebounds.
