On Friday, August 5, bands will take the field at Muscatine High School. Drum Corps International will make a competition tour stop in Muscatine. Seven bands will perform, and the Muscatine High School Marching Band will play a sample of their fall show as the host band. “This is a great event. Over 1,000 musicians will be performing Friday,” said Muscatine Director of Bands Jeff Heide.
Acclaimed drum corps from Louisiana, Texas, Iowa, and California came to Muscatine last Friday. “It is a lot to put together. The corps get here and they stay at schools. We are hosting some of the corps here in Muscatine, and West Liberty High School is helping host this year, too,” said Heide. Corps from all over the nation compete in DCI’s summer league. The musicians range from ages 12 to 22. All of the performers audition for the groups they compete with. They are evaluated on general effect, visual performance, and musicianship. DCI is the premier competition league for Drum and Bugle Corps.
“The level of musicianship will be outstanding,” added Heide. All of the music performed is arranged specifically for these groups.
Muscatine has hosted this event for several years, but most likely, this will be the last. “It is very expensive to put on an event like this. We are doing it again this year, but unless we sell over 2,000 tickets, I don’t know if we will do it again,” said Heide.
Tickets can be purchased at Hy-Vee’s Second Avenue location or can be purchased at the gate. Tickets are $10 per person. The box office will open at 5:30 p.m. The Muscatine Marching Band will begin their performance at 7:00 p.m.
