The Muscatine Lions have vision screened over 5,660 local children since 2004. Several hundred have since been referred to eye doctors who all too often confirmed serious vision problems, but hopefully still in time for treatment.
Lion Julie Herold presently heads up the local Lions project that uses a special medical camera that cost nearly $10,000 and was purchased through a generous grant from a local charity. Julie has reported that in this past 2016-17 school year, 566 students were vision screened, with 46 referred on, which is a disturbing rate.
